W.C. Handy, “father of the blues” grew up in a log cabin in Alabama, built by his grandfather.

At an early age, studied the cornet at a local barbershop.

He was a collector/anthologizer of blues tunes, a historian and music publisher. Waiiting for a train he heard a musician playing his guitar with a knife for a pick, and singing about a local spot where two railroad’s crossed. He called it “the weirdest music I’d ever heard”. The song stayed in his head and became “Yellow Dog Blues”, a song he would publish along with this one..
