DJs in the 60s, from the UK would bypass playing the smoother R&B from Tamla/Motown, and would instead choose to play artists on labels like Okeh, Champion and Cameo-- rarer records on labels that would churn dance floors with their harder sound. We love to play songs that have a big strong back beat that moves quick. Northern Soul!

Thirty Pieces Of Silver

Shakin' up Orange Street- the street with a beat, in 1964 was Jamaican ska singer, and heavyweight producer Prince Buster, a musical pioneer. I love the story that Prince Buster was security for Coxsone Dodd's 'Downbeat" sound system. He was hired because he was a boxer. If anybody wanted to smash Coxsone's sound system, you'd have to get through Prince Buster first. He was super influential with the 2 Tone movement -- Madness "One Step Beyond", and "Madness", are Prince Buster Songs, plus The Specials- "Enjoy Yourself", "Judge Dread"and "Al Capone", to name a few--and we're doing "Thirty Pieces Of Silver".

This is just one of those old chestnuts that you hear over and over. It's a fun song for us to play.  My vocal and guitar are done in one performance, using one mic in a more stripped down version.

I'm Goin' Down

I remember being ten, and buying a single called "Blinded By The Light" by Manfred Mann's Earth band. I played this song over and over again until I drove my brothers crazy.

'Blinded By The Light' was written by Bruce Springsteen. So I guess I've loved Bruce Springsteen's music since I was ten. This song, 'I'm Goin' Down' is one of Bruce's saddest songs.

Buckets of Rain

This song came out on Bob Dylan's Blood On The Tracks album, one of my favorite tracks of all time, and Dylan's one of my favorite artists. I've seen Dylan a few times and when he sings he changes the melody-- the chords stay the same but the melody is completely different from the original version. Nikola, a good friend of ours from Paris, who passed away a few years ago, loved Bob Dylan. Nikola said when you see Dylan live you have to disengage your way of thinking, don't judge it, and just listen to the song as if it was a totally new piece of art. Yes, I'm with Nikola on that.
