Clementina

____CLEMENTINA

Back in the late 1930s and early 40's, pre-World War II, there were a handful of Trinidadian folk singers finding their way into the recording studio singing & performing calypso. The songs were as colorful as the performers, who had names like King Radio, Attilla The Hun, The Growler, Roaring Lion and this one which was originally recorded by Lord Caresser in 1938. Here's our take on "Clementina".

It's A Lonely Trail

ITS A LONELY TRAIL

This tune was originally recorded by singing cowboy & traditional country performer Jimmy Wakely. It was written by Tin Pan Alley songwriter Vaughn Deleath, who was a singer-performer known for her deep reedy voice. Some say Vaughan may have played a significant part in the development of early jazz singing. Jimmy Wakely became one of the West Coast's most well known country music performers. He grew up in Oklahoma, travelled on medicine shows and became a regular on Gene Autry's Melody Ranch tv show on CBS. He soon started recording for Decca Records and appeared on a number of country music tv shows in the 50s and 60s. Here's our take on Jimmy Wakely's "It's A Lonely Trail"

Chills and Fever

CHILLS AND FEVERiTunes//Amazon//Spotify

Ronnie Love originally recorded "Chills & Fever" for Dot Records in 1960 and then re recorded and released a new version in '61 as Johnny Love And The Orchestra on Startime Records. I personally think the second version on Startime is a little more laid back and vibey and has a stronger sax solo. They're both great though. Between 1960 and 1961 Startime released only three singles. The three singles include this one, along with "Shakin' and Breakin" by Ronnie Love, and "You On My Mind" by Walter Brown & Art Clyde Combo. This is our third HARD R&B track this week...to say that we're having fun recording these songs is an understatement.
