Doug Sahm, native son of San Antonio TX., penned this one. His band could play everything--country,rock & roll, blues, western swing & polkas. You name it. Sam said "I'm part of Willie Nelson's world, and and at the same time I'm part of the Grateful Dead's. I don't ever stay in one bag."

I came across a version of this song performed by Hylo Brown. The tune was written by songwriter and piano player Bolivar Lee Shook. Great name. Bolivar would steal rides on freight trains near his home in Prentiss County, Miss. He got thrown from one of those trains, injured his leg and was handicapped for life. Without manual labor for wages- he turned to music. Bolivar taught piano, singing and tuned piano's until he passed in 1964. Spent his childhood in a frame cabin on a hill- which overlooked a wide valley. There you go.

Battering Ram

Times have changed since Rancid originally tracked this one in the summer of 1992. Everything was all word of mouth back then, like where to play, what bands and records to check out... and where to record. All we did around that time was play Gilman Street, play house parties and hang out on Telegraph Avenue everyday. This is a stripped down acoustic version of "Battering Ram".

Originally this one came out on Rancid's 1995 record Out Come The
Wolves. The record was recorded by Jerry Finn at Fantasy Studios in
the Bay-- the same studio that Creedence Clearwater Revival recorded
and our vocals were recorded by Brett Gurewitz at Electric Lady in
N.Y., which was Jimi Hendrix' studio. It's always interesting to
record an old song--it brings back memories.

G.B.H. are hands down, one of the greatest punk bands. I first saw them in 1983 at the On Broadway in San Francisco. My brother Lars Frederiksen was at that same show but I didn't know him at the time. We recently toured with G.B.H.-- I always enjoy watching them play and thirty years later they still kill it. This song was originally on their Leather, Bristles, Studs & Acne EP, which came out in 1981. I always dug how this song started out bluesy, then turned into full-on hardcore.
