Battering Ram

Times have changed since Rancid originally tracked this one in the summer of 1992. Everything was all word of mouth back then, like where to play, what bands and records to check out... and where to record. All we did around that time was play Gilman Street, play house parties and hang out on Telegraph Avenue everyday. This is a stripped down acoustic version of "Battering Ram".

This tune was originally done by rockabilly singer-songwriter Ersel Hickey. Ersel had a hit in the 50s with Bluebirds Over The Mountain. Ersel met Phil Everly (Everly Brothers), who encouraged him to write his own material. So he did. Hickey wrote songs recorded by Richie Valens, The Beach Boys, Jackie Wilson & Lavern Baker too. Â Ersel is in the Rockabilly Hall Of Fame. He's a true rock and roll pioneer. This is our take on this wild jumper!

This song was co-written with my friend Dave Berg-a talented songwriter who lives in Nashville. Dave has written four Number One country songs, and has also co-written a handful of country songs that have reached the Top Ten. We had a good time writing this one.

Fugazi, Verbal Assault and Operation Ivy played together at the Rocket in Providence Rhode Island. It was April 16th, 1988, on Ian Mackaye’s 26th birthday. We’ve remained friends ever since. During that time Operation Ivy toured in a 1969 Newport that was beat to hell. The 69 Newport had a giant box on the roof that my father had built to store our equipment in. Fugazi is one of the greatest and most powerful live bands I have ever seen. Blueprint was on the 1990 Repeater album and is one of my favorite tunes.

The Interrupters are a great young band and this song is going to be on their upcoming record on Hellcat. Three-fourths of the Interrupters perform in the She’s Drunk All The Time video, and Aimee Interrupter sings on other songs that we’ve released–This Time We Got It All Figured Out, Trouble, 30 Pieces of Silver and Too Much Pressure. The Interrupters also play on Safety Pin Stuck In My Heart and Concrete Jungle, among others…
