In 1937 the oil business was just beginning in Trinidad and Tobego. Calypso singer, The Tiger put out this song to talk about the Butler Riots which took place on June 19, 1937. The birth of Trinidad's labor movement, named for Uriah Butler, a fierce defender of workers rights, charged with inciting a riot and sent to jail. This is our take on this heavy and powerful song "Down The Road".

This Calypso was originally written and sung by The Growler (Errol Duke). He was backed at the time by John Buddy Williams and His Blue Rhythm Orchestra. There's a lot of history behind many of the Calypso tunes that came out back then. Some of the songs were about the lack of opportunities, and what people did to survive. The choices weren't always the most glamourous options. Here's our take on In The Dew And The Rain from 1939.
