The music of New Orleans conjures up images of Fats, Smiley or Huey. Strong musical heritage. Cosmos studio was the only place to record besides the local radio station. Kids would hang around outside and gawk- among those.. Shirley and Lee. Here's one of theirs..

Here's more early rock and roll coming at ya. You can't underestimate Bill Haley & The Comets. They were more country than rock and roll when they first started. They junked their cowboy hats and added wild acrobatic stage moves and hip phrases to their song lyrics. Bill and those guys recorded this in '53, a year before the '54 boom.

Battering Ram - Lyric Video

Times have changed since Rancid originally tracked this one in the summer of 1992. Everything was all word of mouth back then, like where to play, what bands and records to check out… and where to record. All we did around that time was play Gilman Street, play house parties and hang out on Telegraph Avenue everyday. This is a stripped down acoustic version of “Battering Ram”.

What WAS the first Rock & Roll record?
This topic always stirs up debate. We did a recording of 1951's Rocket 88 by Jackie Brentson & his Delta Cats, and now we have our version of Rock The Joint by Jimmy Preston, an R&B bandleader that originally recorded this song in 1949.

This one is written by Billy Bragg. His political and social point of view has always been an important part of his writing. Billy is one of the most entertaining troubadours and smartest songwriters around. Rancid toured with him in Australia. He's a super humble guy with a great sense of humor.
