Night Owl

This was done at Ryan Foltz's place in Cleveland with the Ohio Ramblers. I've heard three versions of this song, and I dig them all. One is by Tony Allen and The Champs from the 50s, another is by Bobby Paris, which was a Northern Soul hit in the 60's, and there's a great reggae version by Horace Andy from the early 70s. Our rhythm is like the Bobby Paris version, and our chorus is more like Tony Allen's. If I ever met Horace, I'd ask him what version he was influenced by. I feel this is the kinda song where everyone adds something to every new version as it floats down the river of music. Our addition to the 'Night Owl' was our call and response Outro.

Every time we play this song it comes out a little different. We never know how it's gonna land but that's what makes it fun though. I added a harmonica to it, for an acoustic show I did for the nice people at Guitar Center. This version has the Hutton Brothers and Kevin Bivona playing on it. It features a glockenspiel and plate reverb, which gives it a Phil Spector-ish vibe.

This track is HOT OFF THE GRIDDLE!! It's Friday night, and we just recorded it!! 'Concrete Jungle' was originally on The Specials self-titled album, that was produced by Elvis Costello, and was written by Roddy Byers, aka Roddy Radiation. Roddy recorded with Rancid on the 'Life Won't Wait' record -- he played the guitar solo on 'Hooligans'. The Interrupters are my backing band on this one. Check out the amazing rhythm section of Jesse and Justin, they play like identical twins...oh wait, never mind -- they ARE identical twins.

Usually, flute is not the first instrument you normally think of when it comes to reggae, but I'm a big fan of it. The flute part on this track is inna Duke Reid Treasure Isle fashion; like John Holt's "Ali Baba", and Phyllis Dillon's "Love That A Woman". This song was recorded with some of the 'Engine Room' musicians, who went on to record with me and Jimmy Cliff.
